THE UNIVERSITY OF ZIMBABWE CRICKET EXHIBITION TOURNAMENT

The University of Zimbabwe hosted the U.Z Cricket Exhibition Tournament in a bid to raise funds for the U.Z Golf Scholarship Fund at Eaglesvale College. Four clubs where invited to participate in a round robin Tournament namely Old Malrvenians, Harare Sports Club, Rainbow Cricket Club and Chitungwiza Select. A draw was conducted by the Honorable Pro Vice Chancellor Dr T. Munyanyiwa during a press conference at the University of Zimbabwe. An opening ceremony was held with Minister of Information and Publicity in the office of the President and Cabinet, Honourable Webster Shamu being the guest of honour. Addressing the crowd through his representative, Doctor Ivanhoe Gorira, Director of International Communications in his Ministry, Honourable Minister Shamu encouraged the Young Cricketers to take up sport as an employment career as it has become a highly paying profession. The Minister emphasized that the world population figures have increased dramatically and there was need to starting considering sport as a major employment sector of the economy.

The Tournament kicked off with National League Champions Harare Sports Club taking on highly spirited Rainbow Cricket Club in nail biting encounter. Rainbow pulled a big surprised by biting Harare Sports Club by 27 runs with Bezel Njanji scoring 43 runs off 30 balls for Rainbow putting his team on a commanding position. The other game was between Old Malrvenians and Chitungwiza Select, which saw Chitungwiza Select falling down by just 8 runs short of victory. Another interesting game that was on the calendar was between Old Malrvenians versus Rainbow, which saw Dylan Reinsburg scooping a ball that was delivered by Tatenda Kupinga to the leg side for 2 runs to hand Old Malrvenians a 2 wicket victory with one ball to spare.

Chitungwiza Select lost all their three matches while Rainbow and Harare Sports Club both lost a game each. This left the two teams both tied on top of the log table with 10 points each, with Harare Sports Club winning the tournament with a superior run rate.

A match presentation ceremony and cocktail was held at Country Club in the evening, which saw Simbarashe Gupo being awarded as the Irvines Batsman of the Tournament with 73 runs in three matches. Tatenda Mupunga took 7 wickets in three matches and was handed over the Irvines Bowler of the Tournament Award. Bezel Njanji was awarded with the Betta Balls Cricket Player of the Tournament Award. The late Mashonaland Eagles and Harare Sports Club Coach, Kevin Curran was honoured with the Most Inspirational Coach Award because of the crucial role that he played in nurturing of cricket talent in the Vigne Cup League.
